Community Notice - Fire Ban
From Sipekne'katik EMO Committee
In addition to the recently issued Water Conservation Notice, we are asking for the community's assistance in reducing our wildfire risk. A fire ban is in effect across the entire Province of Nova Scotia. This ban was put in place on July 30th, 2025 and will remain until conditions improve or until October 15, which marks the end of wildfire season.
The Risk:
Current conditions, with very little recent rainfall and none expected in the near future, make it extremely easy for any small spark to ignite a dangerous wildfire. This ban is a critical measure to protect our community and to prevent a repeat of the devastation experienced in 2023. Please also be aware that smoke from wildfires in other provinces may impact our local air quality. Residents with respiratory issues, such as asthma or other health concerns, should take precautions and limit their time outdoors if the air quality is poor.
What is Banned?
Sipekne'katik Cultural Trail, located behind LSK School, will be closed until further notice.
All open fires are strictly prohibited under a proclamation by the Minister of Natural Resources. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Campfires and bonfires
- Brush burning
- Fires in chimeneas
- Any other fire that is not enclosed and uses wood as fuel, as sparks could escape and cause a wildfire.
What is Permitted?
Non-woodburning devices are permitted for use, provided they are used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This includes:
- Charcoal and gas barbeques.
- Gas stoves.
Penalties for Violation:
Be aware that provincial authorities will be strictly enforcing this ban. The consequences for violating the ban are severe:
- The fine for violating the ban is $25,000.
- You may also be held liable for the costs of fighting the fire.
Your cooperation is essential to the safety of our homes and community. Please do your part to prevent wildfires.
Key Facts & Resources:
- The ban applies to all private property and provincial lands.
