‼️Community Notice - Bobcat Sighting‼️

‼️Community Notice - Bobcat Sighting‼️

This is an urgent safety notice from Sipekne’katik EMO Committee and Sipekne’katik Band. There has been Bobcat sightings near the Cultural Trail located behind LSK School in the last 24 hours. For the safety of all residents, the Cultural Trail is to be avoided immediately and until further notice.

We ask all community members to exercise extreme caution and follow the safety instructions below. Although bobcats are usually shy, their repeated presence requires heightened awareness, especially during early morning and late evening hours when they are most active.

For residents near the trail:
‼️Supervise Children and Pets: Never leave children or small pets (especially those under 25 lbs) outside unsupervised, even in fenced yards. Be extra vigilant at dawn and dusk.

‼️Secure Food Attractants: Immediately secure all trash in robust, lidded containers. Do not leave any pet food or water bowls outside.

For the community & public:
Understanding wildlife behavior is key to safety. If you encounter a bobcat:

‼️Do NOT Approach: Keep your distance. Do not attempt to feed, pet, or corner the animal.

‼️Make Noise and Look Big: If the animal does not immediately move away, stand tall, wave your arms, shout in a firm voice, and clap your hands. Make yourself appear as large and intimidating as possible.

‼️Back Away Slowly: Maintain eye contact and slowly retreat from the area. Do not turn your back and run, as this may trigger a predatory chase response.

‼️Protect Children/Pets: Immediately pick up small children and pets.
