FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sipekne'katik Chief & Council Enact Cannabis Control Law
SIPEKNE'KATIK (March 10, 2026)- In an assertion of the Nation's inherent right to govern itself, make its own laws and manage its own affairs without external, controlling authority, the Chief and Council of Sipekne'katik have officially enacted the Sipekne'katik Cannabis Control Law.
This legislative action is effective immediately and establishes that Sipekne'katik holds exclusive jurisdiction over the governance, administration, and regulation of all cannabis-related activities within Sipekne'katik lands and its traditional lands.
"Our movement forward is the protection and prosperity of our people," said Chief Michelle Glasgow. "For too long, external governments have attempted to impose systems that do not work for Sipekne'katik, and causes us further harm. By creating our own law and enforcement, we are fulfilling our inherent responsibility to protect our community for the next seven generations while honoring our treaty rights to trade and commerce."
The Sipekne'katik Cannabis Control Law establishes rigorous provisions respecting licensing, compliance, and the responsible administration of all cannabis-related activities, including production, distribution, sale, and possession. Chief and Council of Sipekne'katik hereby formally enact this law and declare that it shall apply to all persons, businesses, and activities involving cannabis within Sipekne'katik lands and any other lands where Sipekne'katik exercise authority and jurisdiction.
