COMMUNITY NOTICE

RE: Sipekne’katik Statement Regarding PIT-Tagged Lobsters

Chief and Council is aware that Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagged lobsters have been found in catches from our Food, Social and Ceremonial (FSC) fishery. Most recently, community members have found PIT tags in their Treaty Day Ceremonial lobster feed. Our priority is the health and safety of our community and the integrity of the FSC fishery, particularly as the lobster is distributed to Elders, families, and community members.

We are also concerned about the interruption of our treaty-protected FSC fishery. Our community members have a constitutionally protected right to harvest for food, social and ceremonial purposes, and any activity that may interfere with the treaty fishery or cultural practices must be carefully examined.

Council is seeking more information on the purpose, scope, and extent of the tagging, and what it may mean for our harvesters and cultural practices. Transparency and meaningful consultation are essential when activities take place where our members are exercising their rights.

If you find a PIT-tagged lobster, please:

• Photograph the tag and the lobster.

• Keep the tag if possible.

• Note the date and location.

• Report it to the Sipekne’katik Fisheries Department or Band Administration.

• Consider reporting it to the local RCMP and getting a file number.

Council remains committed to the sustainable management of fisheries resources and to protecting the rights, health, and safety of our members. We will continue to gather information, engage with the appropriate authorities, and keep our community informed as more details become available. Council will continue to advocate for clarity, accountability, and the protection of our rights while ensuring the well-being of our people.
