Be Bear Aware, Sipekne’katik!

As the weather warms, our local wildlife is becoming more active, and bear sightings are more likely. To help keep both our community and the bears safe, please follow precautions.

Reduce Attractants

Bears are often drawn to residential areas by the smell of food. Reducing attractants is the best way to prevent encounters:
- Ensure garbage is stored and secured until collection day.
- Bring in pet food when safe to do so.
- Ensure outdoor grills are cleaned, and bird feeders are managed to avoid attracting wildlife.

Stay Aware & Vigilant

Awareness is always important as wildlife activity increases:
- Supervise children and pets when they are playing outdoors.
- Stay alert when walking near wooded areas or during dawn and dusk.

How we behave during an encounter protects everyone:

- Never attempt to approach, corner, or feed a bear.
- If you see a bear, remain calm and give it plenty of room to move away on its own.
